What are the requirements for obtaining an insurance license in New York State, specifically for the lines of authority provided by Licensed Career Institute?
The major requirements are:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Not have been convicted of any felonies.
- Complete the required pre-licensing education.
- Life (only): 20 Hours
- Accident & Health (only): 20 Hours
- Life-Accident & Health: 40 Hours
- Pass the state licensing exam and pay the licensing fee.

What does fulfilling pre-licensing education entail?
To meet the requirements, students must:
- Attend all scheduled classes (make-up classes are required for any missed sessions).
- Pass the school test to receive their certificate.
What happens if I can’t complete the course due to an emergency? We’ve got you covered! Students can reapply for the course within 1 year—at no extra cost.
How do I register for the New York State licensing exam? To register you can complete the process online through the PSI Exams website, the state’s designated testing provider or call them at 1-855-579-4637 Mon-Fri 7:30 AM-10:00 PM Sat and Sun 9:00 AM- 5:30 PM.
Exams are available in both English and Spanish. If you opt for an online proctored exam, ensure your computer meets the required compatibility standards. How do I apply for my New York State license after I pass my exam? Once you pass your exam, your next steps depend on your situation:
- Through a Company: If you’re in the hiring process or already employed, reach out to your manager. They will guide you through the licensing application process on your behalf.
- Independent Applicants: If you’re applying on your own, please follow the instructions provided on the New York State Department of Financial Services license application page.

What are the New York Insurance Continuing Education State Requirements for license renewal? In accordance with Insurance Law Section 2132, licensed insurance professionals in New York must complete 15 credit hours of continuing education (CE) to renew their insurance credentials. CE becomes mandatory once a license has been active for more than 2 years and continues for every subsequent renewal.
When can I start taking Continuing Education courses? Credits must be earned within the licensing period, which begins on the effective date of the license.
Reporting & Compliance
- CE must be completed before submitting renewal
- Course repetition is not allowed.
- Credit carryover is not permitted.
